H.B.’s embarrassing story-
H.B. -While mine didn’t really happen to me, but I was embarrassed. My daughter skates and had just turned 5. She was doing so well and the other mothers and I were talking about how she had made a leap in her skating.
She started dancing around on the ice as we all watched. I was thinking what is she doing….just then I realized she was peeing out on the ice! Next thing I knew the coach was bringing her over to the exit and telling me how I should make sure to wash her skates out too.
My face was bright red but my daughter just skipped to go get her skates off.
Ice Mom-
ice and we are both lucky when I can get her to school on time 3 out
of 5 days a week. In fact, almost nothing will drag me out of bed any
earlier than necessary except… practice ice before a competition!
So, there we were at 6:30 or something (I know, I know – practically
NOON in skating time!) signing her in, turning in her music, getting
her gift bag… but mostly RUSHING to get her on the ice for practice
- because of course we were late and there was only 20 minutes left
(and that would include putting on the skates). So I turned in her
music and she ran off to put her skates on. As we see the coach he
asks if I turned in the music and I say yes. For a brief moment, I
think I should go back and check that I’ve turned in the right music
but she is in the first warm up group of the day so I can certainly
get back to that.
She got her practice in (practically a superstition for us) and went
off with the coach to warm up for her event. Event was (thankfully)
uneventful and we went on with the usual competition afternoon.
Watching, cheering, snacking, checking results, taking pictures…
until it was time (finally) for her second event. Now on the bright
side (in retrospect), no one else had signed up for that event in her
age group so she was actually skating an exhibition. There were
probably 5 or 6 kids in the warm up group, most of them doing
exhibitions, a couple maybe doing test maneuvers or something like
that. Anyway, since this event was in the afternoon (instead of early
morning), everyone had come out to watch – all her skater friends, two
non-skating family friends, a friend from school, even her
grandparents were there from Florida! And since it was an exhibition,
even I wasn’t nervous! What could go wrong???
They announce her name and she skates to center ice with confidence
and poise. The music begins and OH NO!!! THIS IS NOT HER MUSIC!!!!
THIS IS AN OLD PROGRAM!!! This music is from like 2 years ago!!!!
She stands there looking confused, looks over to her coach who sends
her to the referee (who, as fate would have it, was the coach’s
wife). As they confer, I have now gone into hyper mode – running to
the skating bag, taking out the CD case, pulling out the correct CD
(WHAT WAS I THINKING, TURNING IN THE WRONG MUSIC!!!!
AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!), and rushing down with the CD to the referee (who
of course gives me THAT look – you know, the one that says “You are a
complete idiot but because you are my friend I will never say that -
but I will never forget this and will laugh and laugh about it for
years!” Now, of course, all confidence and calm is gone. I am
shaking and I know there is NO way my beautiful daughter can possibly
concentrate enough to do this program without falling. And it’s MY
fault!!! They announce her name again and she did it. Managed to
pull it all together and skate a clean program in spite of that
horrible beginning.
But the best part of the story is that we were having it
videotaped… and they got it all on tape. So yes, I posted that
little section on You Tube under “Mommy’s an idiot!”
