Figure Skating Paintings-Kish Studio

Figure Skating Paintings-Kish Studio
Note from Ice Coach: Today’s post is a guest post from Scott Kish of Kish Studio. Scott had sent me some pictures of work he has done. It’s not often that artists focus on the sport of Figure Skating, so I asked Scott to write a guest post on how he got interested in the sport.

Having graduated in kinesiology from the University of Waterloo (BSC KIN-1995) I contemplated the possibilities of depicting motion on a two-dimensional effect. This soon became the common trait of my art. As I had played many sports throughout the years, I had an intimate knowledge of the movements and strategies of these sports. I enjoy attempting new sports each year, if only sometimes to observe, as if offers new subject matter with different synergies of movement.

While hockey was my winter sport of choice growing up, I was constantly carted out to the Figure Skating Club to watch my sister practice and compete. She skated out of Ilderton Skating Club in Ontario, the home club of Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue, where Scott’s mother and aunt served as her coaches and instructors.

Inspired by Scott and Tessa’s Olympic performance, I decided to paint a series of figure skating paintings. Drawing from the endless hours of observation I had banked in my younger years.

I selected a few different scenarios that are common for competing skaters and attempted to portray the graceful movements and transfer of energy associated with the sport. In completion, I created 2 paintings of Scott and Tessa’s gold medal performance. These paintings were presented to them during their recent visit home to the Ilderton Arena.

Below are more pictures of some of Scott’s figure skating paintings. If you want to see more of his work you can go to http://www.kishstudio.com/main.php

What do you think of the paintings? Do you know of anyone else that makes Figure Skating art?

Wow, I'm impressed. I'm not sure I'd go as far as having one in my home (mainly because at home I try and get away from skating, not more into it!) but Scott has certainly raised the bar with these skating inspired works. The lines are very energetic and the colours teasing through the mass of movement are quite inspiring. Makes me want to get my skates on!

These are beautiful – there’s a nice mix of color and movement. You are right – there is not much quality figure skating artwork available, but a new painting called “Joyous Waltz” is available at http://www.icedancers.com It’s worth checking out!
