Moves in the Field US Figure Skating Rule Change September 2010-Int, Novice

September is fast approaching – is your skater ready for the US Figure Skating Moves in the Field change? Are you hoping to quick get in one last test session before September?

The new Moves in the Field changes go into effect September 2, 2010, less then two months from today! There have been revisions at some levels, eliminations of moves, and new moves created. The goal of creating the new moves was to introduce skaters to more types of turns in figure skating, such as loops and twizzles, which were previously not on any Moves test. There are also new criteria to be met depending on what level the test is. There is more focus on continuous flow and turn execution.

Below I will outline only the moves that will be changing at the Intermediate and Novice level. I will post about Junior and  Senior next Monday

Intermediate Moves in the Field Test-

1. Spiral Sequence- New pattern!-

The move begins with a Left Forward Outside spiral that should be held until the length of the rink.  The skater then brings the free leg down and completes a  Right Forward Inside open Mohawk, steps wide with a two-foot transition to one back crossover.  The skater will  then push onto a  Left Back Outside Edge spiral and hold it  the length of the rink. The skater then completes spirals on the opposite foor by stepping into a Right Forward Inside spiral, then a Right Foward Inside Mohawk, into a Left Back Inside spiral held until the length of the rink. See the pattern below

2. Foward Outside Twizzles- New Pattern!

A twizzle is a traveling turn on one foot (forward or backward with one or more rotations and can be on inside and outside edges. A Twizzle is quickly rotated with uninterrupted action, but it is not a spin. If the traveling action stops during the execution, the twizzle becomes a solo spin.

Forward Outside Twizzles – Start with a Left Forward Outside Cross Stroke to begin a Right Forward Outside twizzle which will consist of 1-1/2 rotations and ends on a Right Back Inside Edge.  Then step to a  Left Forward Outside to complete the “set.” Repeat three sets across the width of the rink, and they should be repeated on the opposite foot in the same manner. The second part of the move is the Forward Inside Twizzles. This starts with a LFI roll to a RFI twizzle after 1-1/2 revolutions you end on a RBO edge. The skater shall then step LFI to complete the “set”.

Novice- The  Novice test has 3 new patterns.

1. Backward and Forward Inside Three-turns/Rocker-Choctaw Sequence. I have to say, I really love that this pattern is no combined.  This used to be 4 seperate patterns and 4 trips around the rink, which takes lots of energy. Now its one pattern!  This is definately my favorite change.  Since the moves are not new, just combined I will not describe them below but just give you the diagram.

2. Forward Loops-

A loop is turn in the shape of a tear drop that is formed within a circle, on the same edge. They are skated across the width of the rink.  Begin with a LFO swing roll and prepare for the first RFO loop.  Push into a LFO loop when returning to the axis and repeate two times.  After the last LFO loop, comes  a RFI chase which will set you up for a LFI loop.  This loop is followed by a push into a RFI loop.  These loops are repeated two times completeing  the move.

3. Backward Twizzles

The backward outside twizzles begin with a LFO three turn &  change of edge into a LBO double  twizzle with a two-foot push to assist rotation, then step forward onto a RFO three turn, changing edge into a RBO twizzle, completing a “twizzle set.”  Each “twizzle set” is performed three times down the length of the arena.  The backward inside twizzles are skated on the second side of the ice.  The second side begins with a RFI mohawk whose exit edge is the entry for a RBI double twizzle.  The skater then steps forward onto a LFI mohawk whose exit edge is the entry edge for the LBI double twizzle, completing  the set.

Are you ready for the rule change? Are you testing before Sept. 2010 ? Which MIF are you focusing on right now, the new or the old?

That chick who skates the Novice Moves – BI FI 3s Rocker Choctaw Sequence is fast.

I know, she must have worked on these moves well in advance while we were all working on the “old” moves.

Not to mention that looks like a good abs/obliques workout. Can I say twist?

  • icecoach

No kidding. I tried this pattern about a week ago, and its not easy transitioning between the lobes. However I must say it is 1000 times better then the four seperate patterns it used to be.
