New Figure Skating reality show: Skating with the Stars

New Figure Skating reality show: Skating with the Stars

Have you heard? There is going to be a show called skating with the stars. How exciting is that? The show will be similar to dancing with the stars only with figure skaters. I don’t know about you, but I am a reality show addict. I can’t get enough, so the fact that there is one that revolves around figure skating is a dream come true!  Skating with the Stars will premiere after Dancing with the Stars on Monday, November 22 on ABC.

So far I the most famous star I know that will be on the show is Bethenny Frankel. Bethenny stars in the Real Housewives of New York City, is a popular chef and has her own line of margaritas called Skinny Girl Margarita. Other stars to appear on the show include  former Motley Crue singer Vince Neil. Vince contests that  he actually was actually a competitive figure skater when he was younger. I am anxious to see how he does. Other stars include Blade Runner actress Sean Young, soap star Rebecca Budig, Disney star Brandon Mychal Smith, Olympic Gold Medalist skier Jonny Moseley.

You may be thinking you have déja vu. In 2006 there was a similar show.  Skating with Celebrities was another skating reality show aired on Fox network in January or ’06. Its first and only season ended in March of that year.

The show was hosted by Olympic Gold Medalist in swimming Summer Sanders and Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton.  It was  judged by Olympic Gold Medal winner Dorothy Hamill.

So will you be watching Skating with Celebrities? Have you heard anything else about the show? Who will the skaters be?

I’m excited about this show- but after skating with celebrities, and the HORRIBLE skating’s next star reality show, I don’t have much hope for ice skating reality.

I’m most excited about Johnny Mosley- I remember him at the Olympics, and again as a commentator in Vancouver. Having done aeriels, surely he’s fearless enough to tackle basic jumps pretty quickly.

I am excited to see Johnny as well. I don’t want to get my hopes up as the last skating reality show only lasted one season. I will keep my fingers crossed it starts to take off like Dancing with the Stars did!

its just like the english ‘dancing on ice’ which is the same format and has been running since 2006 however the skating is usally weak but can have some funny parts see this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gGR28wrKiQ&feature=related

From the videos on the SWTS website, it seems that Rebecca Budig is partnered with Fred Palascak (http://www.fredandmel.com) who, along with his wife and skating partner Melanie, was one of the pros on Dancing on Ice for the past few years.

This article seems to name all the skaters: http://www.examiner.com/ice-skating-in-pittsburgh/abc-reveals-cast-and-professionals-of-skating-with-the-stars

Thanks for sharing. I haven’t see the SWTS website yet. I wonder if they will ever get any big name skaters to do it?

Denis Petukhov is one of the skaters, went to the Olys in 2006 so he is a name, at least for those that follow skating.
Evan seems to be all over the place, if it makes another season I wouldnt be surprised if he showed up. Johnny W and Dick Buttons are two of the judges.

Thanks Angel, I didn’t know Johnny and Dick would be judges!

The British Dancing on Ice has become quite competitive amongst the celebrities. While we’re told they get 8-12 weeks training before the show starts, the reality is they go find themselves a coach as soon as they know they’re auditioning. Some of them end up on the reserve list, and finally make it a year or two later and so end up with quite a bit of training first. But they’re still only at LTS level with a few tricks but it’s really kept the public interest in skating and has filled the rinks and the coaches books.

Dancing on ice (here is England) in always very funny, the skating is pretty bad most of the time but for me that’s part of the fun. There was a contestant last year or the year before possibly who attempted an axel in the last week (landed it but missing half a rotation) showing the celebrities do very much improve. The only problem with Dancing on Ice is that it uses celebrities no one has ever heard of because they’re mainly soap opera stars :( . But Torvill and Dean and Robin Cousins act as mentors and a judge respectively so there always interesting.

The trouble with the UK version of this is that the emphasis is hugely on lifts and flashy things rather than on anything that resembles skating – I’ve often thought that it should be called “dancing off the ice” here as the female celebrities spend most of their time being carried around by the professionals. It also makes it MUCH harder for the male celebs as they have to do all the lifts as well as learning to skate.

Although all credit to the female celebs who let a strange man hoist them up all over the ice – and to the female professionals who let complete beginners lift them! But don’t think it’s going to be like DWTS (which I love) where you end up with couples where you sometimes can’t tell who is the pro and who is the celeb…

I will be fascinated to see how the US version compares with the UK one though – DWTS is so much more professional in the US than Strictly in the UK…I wonder if that will be repeated with skating!

We have “Battle of the Blades” here in Canada. The concept is to take hockey players and pair them up with figure skaters and then the teams compete against each other. The winning team gets $100,000 donated to the charity of their choice and all the others get $25,000. This is the second year and it was really, really good. Female skaters included Jamie Sale, Annabelle Langlois, Isabelle Brasseur, Ekaterina Gordeeva and Shae-Lynn Bourne. You can check it out at CBC.ca. You really won’t believe what those hockey players were able to accomplish!

Last Monday’s episode was truly amazing- two skaters attempted & landed full flips. One of them two-footed, the other landed cleanly on one foot. They’ve only been skating for two months. Think of all the hours they must train.
I wonder why there wasn’t any salchows or loops. I’m guessing because those jumps need a good deal more edge control?
What do you think of these full-flip-landing adults, Ice Coach?

I didn’t see this past week only the first week. I assumed maybe they would do a waltz jump. To do a flip jump in just two months is pretty amazing! Good for them. I will have to watch tomorrow.

UGGG!!! They were practicing in our rink in NJ and we lost tons of time. We had to sign waivers if our DD were skating when they were practicing and we couldn’t get on or play our music for some of the freestyle ice time. Of course it was right before a competition!!!!

Really? Sounds fun, but also frusterating that they would be able to come in and interrupt your precious ice before a competition. I bet it was fun to watch them though.
